MADE for Kids is a bit like the Art Studio/Make-It Workshop at The Magic House, supersized, with STEAM activities from digital painting and a well-stocked art/craft studio to pottery wheel, button-making station, and 3D printing projects. The recycling/upcycling craft area offers fun tools from scissors and needle/thread to hot glue guns.

Located in a renovated Victorian mansion, the museum invites kids to role play, conduct experiments, and get physical on the hopscotch courts in the outdoor play garden. In 2008, a 25,000 square foot expansion with even more exhibits opened. The Magic House welcomes 400,000 visitors a year, making it one of the nation's most popular children’s museums. Family Plus ($250) is a great option for parents and kids from a single household who want to get into both museums. The Magic House engages all children in hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination, pique curiosity, enhance creativity and develop problem-solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic. In 2019, to further extend the reach of The Magic House in the community, we opened MADE for Kids, a new satellite location created for children ages 4-14 on the north side of Delmar Boulevard in the City of St. Louis.

In 2005, Zagat’s "U.S. Family Travel Guide" called The Magic House museum in St. Louis the country's best attraction for children. Yep, even Disney’s Magic Kingdom took a backseat to The Magic House. From pizzas to piazzas, Ciao Bambini (hello children!) transports families to the beautiful country of Italy.

But there’s also a multistory slide, a play area for tots, a treehouse, a market, and even a place to practice being president. General AdmissionGeneral admission tickets give you all-day access to hundreds of interactive exhibits. Everyone from grandparents on down can have fun at The Magic House, but the exhibits are mostly designed for younger children.

Again in 2008, The Magic House underwent a major expansion as it added a 25,000-square-foot addition nearly doubling the size of the Museum.[5] In 2005, "A Little Bit of Magic" was transformed into the hands on STEM exhibit, WonderWorks. Residents of St. Louis County, City of St. Louis, Jefferson County, Franklin County, St. Charles County, Warren County and Lincoln County can enjoy $3 admission per person from 3 p.m. To receive the discount, guests need to provide proof of residency.

Group VisitsThe Magic House offers a special group rate of $7 per person for groups of 15 or more people. In order to receive this rate, a minimum of one adult chaperone is required for every five children. The Magic House is one of the top Children’s Museum’s in the country, inspiring children to discover the world through play as they explore hundreds of exciting interactive exhibits.

The “For Baby & Me” area features a peek-a-boo barn, baby gym, and miniature school bus. Toddlers can spend their time at “A Little Bit of Magic,” a fun exhibit that includes a textured tunnel to crawl through, a sandbox for digging, and a mirror maze. This exhibit transports kids back to the time of dinosaurs and encourages basic scientific learning.

Since it opened, MADE for Kids has served over 60,000 visitors and developed important community partnerships in the region and implemented a workforce development initiative for neighborhood youth. There are also dozens of activities for elementary school-aged children, such as the kid-sized community with a bank, grocery store, library, and fishing pond. Tweens enjoy the recurring exhibit called "Kirkwood Safety Town," which frequently opens in the weeks around back-to-school time in the fall. In this mock neighborhood, kids learn about fire, water, and traffic safety, and they can even get fitted for a bike helmet. Older kids also enjoy the chance to star in a television newscast and have fun with an electrically charged ball you can touch to make your hair stand on end.

One of the most popular, Big Truck Day, will blow the minds of your young vehicle lovers. Generally held in the fall, it’s a ticketed event that brings cranes, fire trucks, bucket lifts, sleeper cab trucks, and more up close for examination and exploration. Admission also includes a hot dog lunch and private playtime in Trike Town. Cultural events, too, like an observance of the Hindu festival of colors, Holi, and a German Easter celebration, draw crowds.

Perhaps the biggest step that Christ Church has taken is to create the new staff position of wellness director. The vestry, the lay leadership body, agreed to fund the full-time position in January 2019. Bill Blue praises his church’s commitment to shatter stereotypes around mental illness. Faced with a family mental health emergency and finding nowhere to turn, Bill Blue retired early from Wells Fargo.

We seek to fulfill this vision by gathering to love God through our vibrant worship and by seeking to grow in our faith by engaging our hearts and mind in thoughtful, relevant education. Despite its growing support of mental health, the congregation was shocked by the rash of suicides. Among the dead was a 20-year-old college student, a 51-year-old businessman and father of two who was active in the church, and the Kocmonds’ son Nathan. As Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson teaches, preaches, and serves as a resource for the clergy and spiritual formation teams to foster deeper spiritual growth across the whole parish.

Edens said the ministry isn’t based on the belief that Jesus alone can heal what ails us. God, he notes, works through many means, including health care, exercise, meditation and more. The support group was formed after the congregation was rocked by a half-dozen suicides within five years — a series of traumas that affected nearly everyone at the church, the largest Episcopal congregation in North Carolina. In 2006, the church building was honored with placement on the National Register of Historic Places, thanks largely to the work of former parishioner Donia Norman.

As a family they love to travel, and have enjoyed trips to Italy, Ukraine, the Grand Canyon, Northern California, and England. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation. Writing is a passion of Allen's, whether for sermons, articles, or the short novel he's been trying to finish for a few years. He also loves listening to all kinds of music, and like just about everyone on the planet, "Ted Lasso" has become a favorite show. He is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League and is excited about Charlotte's very own MLS team! Allen and his wife, Casey, have two girls, Abby Grace (16) and Ila (12).

We worshiped on the lawn when weather and COVID-19 rates permitted. On Good Friday, families participated in Stations of the Cross outdoors, aided by audio recordings for each station available on our app. Christmas Eve and Easter pilgrimages provided opportunities to visit the sanctuary, beautifully decorated and filled with music. Some of these creative new events will surely become beloved traditions.

But he also notes that there’s a difference between being included and truly belonging. He urges congregations to ask themselves whether they truly welcome the mentally ill into the life of the church and let them know they have a place in God’s home. Besides offering people opportunities to share their life challenges, Christ Church seeks to equip them with information and resources, to direct them toward help, and to encourage them not to suffer in silence. In the Church, features guest musicians, candlelight, sermon, poetic prayers from Enriching our Worship and a more informal atmosphere.

She is married to Tim Saunders, a retired pediatric and neuro-ophthalmologist. They enjoy biking, travel, reading, movies and spending time with children and grandchildren. We are a Christ-centered Episcopal church rooted in scripture, tradition and reason; respectful of and strengthened by our differences.

Our other sacramental rites are Confirmation, Ordination, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation of the Penitent and Unction. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church.

Ben has toured England, France, and the U.S. extensively with his choirs and as an organist. While at St. Peter’s he led the church through the design and acquisition of a new organ, C.B. He has served on the Board of Directors and led summer training courses for the Royal School of Church Music in America.

“It was like a huge pressure valve was released and people could breathe when talking about mental illness,” she said. The experience emboldened Purdy to share her story at churches, mental health seminars — wherever she could. She launched her ministry as a speaker and advocate for mental health at Christ Church.

Along with that parish work, he served as a convocational dean, on the Commission on Ministry for the Diocese of Atlanta, and on the faculty for “Learning to Lead,” the diocesan class for clergy in new positions. Teaching, vocational discernment, and learning alongside others are important to his work. The remarkable generosity of our parish enabled an outpouring of care for others, including a massive food drive, a mask ministry and care partnerships with those who were isolated.

Kurt Cobain still belongs to Seattle 25 years later Cascade PBS News

Cobain ended the show within an hour and forced the band to take a 10-day break. He flew to Rome to meet his family, only to overdose on Rohypnol on March 4. I loved that I was able to go from downtown Victoria to downtown Seattle without the hassle of dealing with a car. Luckily, we didn't encounter any issues leaving the city, but we passed by a gridlock of cars trying to go the other direction.

Home where Kurt Cobain committed suicide 27 years ago gets new owner

The linkage seems permanent for the city and for Cobain, though he only officially had a home address in Seattle for 13 months, and much of that time was on the road touring. There have been other Seattle music stars, but few have been as tied to Seattle in the mind of the popular zeitgeist as Kurt Cobain. Jimi Hendrix was born here, but his music is rarely described as “the Seattle Sound,” and Hendrix had to venture to London to find fame. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and a thousand other bands all played a part in our musical revolution, but in the mind of the rest of the world, and on the charts, everyone followed Nirvana. The home has four bedrooms and four baths and covers 8,212 square feet, according to a listing from Ewing and Clark realtors.

After Kurt Cobain's tragic death, the house in Seattle where he took his own life became a place of pilgrimage for his millions of heartbroken fans. But three months later, the property became the scene of a tragedy that soon made headlines around the world, when it was revealed that Cobain had died by suicide at the residence on April 5 of that year. Love continued to live in the tragic property for several years after her husband's death, but it has changed hands a number of times since.

The Impact of Atmospheric Pressure on Oil Drum Flattening: A Scientific Investigation

Only eight people attended the private ceremony on Waikiki Beach on Feb. 24. Cobain wore pajamas and a Guatemalan purse, while Love wore a dress once owned by actress Frances Farmer. The Victoria Clipper is more expensive, but it's a much more relaxing travel experience than the car ferry. Unless you're traveling with a big group or have plans that will take you outside of the city, I don't see any advantage to bringing your car on the ferry to Seattle.

The ultimate guide to North Cascades National Park

It was where 25 years and three days ago, Cobain bought a box of shotguns shells for a gun he had purchased the previous week on Lake City Way. I think the most pain in my heart goes to thinking of that moment, trying to understand what is not possible to truly understand, and trying to come to terms with the loss that followed. If there is one sign of how much Seattle has changed in the past 25 years, it could come in tracing the places where Nirvana actually played in the city. There were a couple dozen venues that hosted Nirvana on the way up, but just a fraction of them still have music. Made up of four bedrooms and five baths, the home spans over 7,000 square feet and is situated on nearly an acre of land with views of Lake Washington.

They’re decorated with flowers, letters, names, lyrics, poems, and objects left by fans who have visited the place. Nostalgia surrounds the area, and it’s believed that Cobain used to sit there to write lyrics and spend some alone time. In late March of 1994 he fled from a Los Angeles rehab center and flew home. He hung out around Seattle for a few days and was last seen on April 3rd.

Fans of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain have flocked to Seattle for years to pay homage to the band. Bars, museum exhibits, and even Cobain’s house can all be found here. This self-guided tour through Seattle will give you an intimate look into the story of the iconic grunge band, Nirvana. Local or tourist, you’ll want to stop by these historic corners that still hold an aura of talent and tragedy.

After recording an album that would go on to sell 25 million copies — which no one knew would happen at the time — Cobain then slept the next few days in his car. In addition to being a stunning example of Queen Anne-style architecture, one Seattle house on the market is also a piece of pop culture history. Located a block from Lake Washington, the 117-year-old residence was once home to the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love, and is now for sale for $7.5 million.

Grunge and the Seattle music scene that Nirvana spearheaded changed how Seattle was viewed outside of the city, but they also changed how Seattle viewed itself. Music gave Seattle an identity beyond Microsoft and Boeing and instead of being a place that made planes and software, Seattle became ground zero for youth culture and alternative music. When Nirvana’s Nevermind hit the top of the Billboard charts in January 1992, that feat alone represented the start of a different Seattle, a city that created culture rather than followed trends.

Friday April 5, 2019, represents the 25th anniversary of Kurt’s Cobain’s suicide. The death of Nirvana’s frontman remains one of the darkest moments in pop history. Next to the house, in Viretta Park, fans have turned two benches into a message board of writing expressing their love for Cobain. There is also a fence bordering the property that fans like to write on too. I started my Cobain trip at the Marco Polo, a no-frills motel on the gritty periphery of Seattle that Cobain frequented in his final days, when his heroin addiction controlled his life.

She lived there until 1997, when she sold the house that Cobain had initially bought for $1,485,000, per King County records. Despite the house's tragic history — or perhaps because of it — the value of the house roughly doubled in the space of three years, to $2,895,000. The two original benches in Viretta Park, located near the house where Cobain died, were sold at auction in 2014, but their replacements have garnered the same attention from fans.

His final home – and the site of his suicide – is a pretty grand pad, but it’s been almost two decades since anyone to do with the Nirvana frontman has lived there. County records show a detached garage was added in 2000 and there’s a decade-old city permit for a new boiler, but the rest is a mystery—unless you have several million dollars handy. Cobain and Love purchased the mansion in early 1994 for $1.49 million (about $2.6 million in today’s dollars), King County property records show, and Love sold the home to a trust in 1997 for $2.9 million. Built in 1902, the four-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot home in the posh lakefront Denny-Blaine neighborhood has a coastal take on the Queen Anne style, with shake commingling with ornate millwork and windows.

Three years after his death, the home sold for $2.9 million to Mr. Euyang Walter Jr., a Seattle businessman, property records show. The band rocketed to fame in the early ’90s on the strength of their 1991 album “Nevermind,” helping to usher in the grunge movement alongside other Seattle acts like Alice in Chains. The Nirvana frontman was residing in the house with his wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances-Bean Cobain when he was found dead in the greenhouse in April of 1994. Love sold the house to a trust in 1997 and had the greenhouse torn down.

Death anniversaries are particularly hard to understand or to participate in. I spent years researching Cobain’s life, but there is much that still feels like a mystery, perhaps because suicide and addiction themselves are unknowable demons. There were 30,000 suicides in the U.S. the year Kurt died; in 2017 there were roughly 45,000, including two people I knew, one of whom happened to be Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, who often brought up Cobain when we talked.

Rows 15 and back had to go down the stairs and back up the back stair entrance to the plane. Then they inform us that we are delayed for paperwork for an hour. Then, about 45min later they inform us that it'll be another 60-90mins. No wifi, no seat entertainment, no drink or snacks offered. And we were not allowed to deboard.

Enjoyed our flight with Ryanair to Arrecife. Flight boarded pretty much on time, crew were welcoming and very good. Generally good for a frequent low cost flight, Seats could however have been more comfortable. Due to multiple factors, expect to potentially pay more when booking in July. For low rates, February can be a great choice for travel to Dublin. Flights to Dublin from Charlotte in February are about $1,099 on average during February, but can be found for as low as $369.

The flight was on time and the crew very professional. Everything went as expected and I will use BA again for this trip. The usual average Ryanair flight, but we landed 20 min before due time, which was very good. Amazing KLM service and brilliant economy comfort seats. I requested wheel chair assistance , it was confirmed via email that inwoood get it but I didn’t get it . The last leg of my trip to Nigeria was the worst.

Charlotte to Dublin flights leaving soon

The flight was delayed by 3.5 hours and the American Airlines staff at the airport where nit very helpful. Once boarded, the flight crew were unhelpful, the food was poor and the aircraft was tatty. Both flights were delayed due to maintenance issues.

I booked the flight with Finnair, which made the arrangements for downloading a boarding pass unnecessarily complicated. Instead I'd book direct with AA. I loved how they arrange boarding (starting with people seated in back and moving to the front). Flight crew was very polite and welcoming. Seating was ok, I felt like there was enough leg space however it is noticeable when the passenger in front of you sets their seat back.

Good to know - Cheap tickets to Dublin

The first plane had mechanical issues. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be.

Because they where late boarding all four of our bags where left behind on our last connecting flight. I had trouble finding a boarding pass because I had an hour between Flights and American did not see my flight I believe because I was ticketed through KAYAK. I paid extra to have more legroom and it is definitely worth it for a six hour flight.

When is the best time to book a flight from Charlotte to Dublin?

We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane.

Keeping a clean sheet was as important for Dublin as scoring the game’s only three-pointer. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. Altogether 14 or 15 people missed the flight FR4500 from Cologne to Dublin. Bad experience with the staff boarding the gate. I couldn’t board with my carry on, personal item and a funny bag.

On our outbound flight thee were no problems. On the return flight we were charged for each bag totaling $400! We are working with customer service to resolve the issue. I suspect i caught flu on this flight as i could hear someone coughing a few rows back and ended up with flu a few days later.

When you cramped nearly 300 passengers into that space is was unbearable. Millions of users choose and trust Cheapflights to book the best flight deals from Charlotte to Dublin for free. We help you search and compare prices from hundreds of airlines for the right flight just for you.

I liked the piloting of the aircraft. Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. There was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class.

Chasing Kurt Cobain in Washington State The New York Times

The property, which was first built in 1902, later became an infamous piece of rock ‘n’ roll history on April 5, 1994, when Cobain shot himself inside the home’s greenhouse. After breaking up the band, at age 22 Crash made a death pact with his girlfriend, Casey Cola, to inject themselves with $400 worth of heroin and die like legends. At the last minute, it is not clear whether out of love or egomania, the vocalist decided to give his partner a non-lethal amount so that only he would die.

But luckily, one of the easiest ways to get between Canada and the US is by ferry. Follow us on Twitter to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders. Seattle’s claim is that Nirvana debuted “Teen Spirit” here before an audience at the O.K. For all the legend of the song, you would think the Seattle audience in the building would have demolished the structure with enthusiasm. Instead, the crowd responded more enthusiastically to other better-known songs in the set. Built in 1902, the house is in exclusive Denny Blaine, an affluent east central Seattle neighborhood on the banks of Lake Washington.

It sits on more than three-quarters of an acre just a block from Lake Washington. According to the City of Seattle’s survey of historic resources from the late 2000s, it was remodeled in the 1940s and 1950s. Although the garage still stands the greenhouse was torn down shortly after his death. In December of 2003 Courtney stopped making the payments and the house was auctioned off.

And don’t get me started on opioids because I think about that and Cobain every time I drive down Aurora Avenue, a part of the city still filled with sleazy hotels where Cobain often stayed on drug binges. The word epidemic is finally used to talk about the opioid crisis, but to those in Seattle music, this is old news. Starting with Andrew Wood in 1990, there has been a long list of famous and soon-to-be-famous deaths. But Cobain’s status is something altogether different in Seattle, a city that shaped him, and that in ways he shaped.

I read through all of Cobain’s journals and diaries, many of which are unpublished, and Seattle is mentioned often, long before he moved to the city. He wrote numerous bio sheets for Nirvana, and in almost all, he tried to connect himself to Seattle (usually by claiming the band was “from the outskirts of Seattle”). He also complained about how pricey Seattle was, and how much it cost to drive to Seattle from Olympia. “It would be too fucking expensive” with only one passenger, he wrote. The 1990s grunge rock god and Love, now 57, had purchased the Queen Anne-style house for $1.48 million in January 1994 – three months before his death. Walter, 64, and his family would remain in the historic home for 23 years before deciding to part ways with the property, listing the residence for sale at a pricey $7.5 million in 2019.

Kurt Cobain’s house

However, a cunning fan recently decided to pop his camera under the fence, and came out with one of the first looks at the house the general public has seen in years. The pic – which you can see above – was posted on Reddit earlier this month. If you're looking for your dream Seattle home full of music history and a little bit of eeriness, we've got news for you. Wow I can't believe Courtney Love allowed his home to be auctioned off. When one thinks ⁢of influential figures in the ⁣world of art⁢ and⁢ design, Norman Chapman may not ‌be the first name ⁤that comes ⁣to ⁤mind.

Usually, on anniversaries, there are crowds and tears and someone singing a Nirvana song on an acoustic guitar. Though Courtney Love remained at the house, she did make one symbolic alteration to the property related to Cobain's death. The Nirvana frontman had died in the property's greenhouse, rather than the house itself, and at some point after his death, Love had the greenhouse torn down.

The Truth Behind Aretha Franklin’s Untimely Death

From there, it was a 40-minute drive to the Tsawwassen car-ferry dock. To make the trip worth it, I booked a hotel room — otherwise, I'd basically have to turn right around because of the ferry schedules. I love how conveniently located the Victoria Clipper terminals are — right in the heart of downtown Victoria. As a long-time resident of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, I love to take weekend trips to Seattle. Nirvana’s show at the Off Ramp attracted five different major labels and essentially it was that performance, and watching the response of the Seattle crowd, that persuaded major label DGC to sign them. Many things made Nirvana and Kurt Cobain an icon, but one small piece of that history was made in that dingy club on Eastlake, which at the moment still exists.

According to the 2007 BBC documentary “The Last 48 Hours of Kurt Cobain,” Cobain used to duck out of his mansion in the exclusive Denny-Blaine neighborhood to meet one of his preferred heroin dealers along Aurora Avenue. An electrician found the body at Kurt Cobain’s house in a greenhouse above the detached garage. The coroner’s report deemed Kurt Cobain’s death a suicide by gunshot. While the shotgun, shells, and new suicide note near his body suggested as much, well-documented theories that Kurt Cobain was murdered have since entered the public discussion. Although today Kurt Cobain’s house growing up is a landmark, he hardly spent time there.

There are steps behind one of the benches in Viretta Park, and we are not sure if those lead to a better view of Kurt's home. There were lots of messages written, pics drawn, notes left, and flowers left at the benches in Viretta Park. It's in a very upscale neighborhood, not a place I expected to find Kurt's house as he seemed very down to earth. Visiting the ‍Kurt Cobain House in Seattle is a unique and memorable experience for fans of the iconic musician. Located in the peaceful neighborhood of Denny-Blaine, the house has become a pilgrimage site for admirers of Cobain’s work ⁣and legacy. ‍When visiting the property, ⁣there are several things ‌to keep in mind to make the most of the experience.

Cobain was found in the greenhouse of the estate, which Love later had demolished. The Nirvana frontman was discovered on the property, which he shared with wife Courtney Love, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 5, 1994, at 27. The four bed, four bath home was built in 1902 in the Denny Blaine subdivision of Seattle, Wash. According to the listing, it's 8,212 square feet and sits on 0.74 acres of land. In conclusion, Norman Chapman’s impact on the field ‍of economics and his dedication to ‌education and research ⁢are undeniable.

When Was My House Built? Learn the Property History

With the wealth of information available online, you can often make significant progress in your research without even having to leave your house. Permits can tell you a lot about the original construction of the property and any later additions to the home. The city or county permitting department may have an online permit center, where you can search for current or past permits by address or parcel number. The Library of Congress (LOC) has digitized many maps—cities, towns, railroads and more—that can be useful in your search.

This field guide from OldHouses.com provides examples of home styles from the 1600s to the present. You’ll see photographs of homes in the styles covered along with handy lists of the defining features for each style. But the website DiedInHouse.com will tell you (you guessed it) whether anyone has died in your home. There are instances in which real-estate agents have to disclose this information, but many states don’t require it.

If you really want to learn about an area, find a local historian or take a local tour. Even if the home isn’t an area with lots of tourism and tours, there will often be a local historical society, professor, or even just local history enthusiast who will be happy to share their insights with you. Hiring someone else to do the digging can be a great option if you have more money than time to spend on your property history research. Spanning a wide range of visual media, the USC Digital Library offers digital images of drawings, illuminated manuscripts, maps, photographs, posters, prints, rare illustrated books, as well as audio and video recordings. A portion of the images contained in the USC Digital Library come from the collections of collaborating institutions which, like USC, have valuable archival collections that are of interest to a wide range of people. How to find out who owns a property

Working with the town historian, she learned that her 2.7 acres had been part of a farm established by one John Sutton in the early 1700s and that a structure existed on the land in the 1730s. Schondorf presumed that her house included part of that original homestead—but now, after more digging, she’s unsure if Mr. Sutton ever lived within its walls. If your local library isn’t as helpful as you would like (or even if it is), the local building department should be your next stop. They will be able to provide insights around building codes and any possible violations that the home has — whether that’s because the rules changed or a previous owner broke the rules. While many types of property records are straightforward, others may be harder to make sense of. Luckily, there are professionals who look at these documents all the time, including real estate attorneys, escrow agents, and real estate agents. So, if you’ve started your search and have questions, be sure to reach out to your real estate agent or other trusted real estate professional. The property details listed will include the assessor’s parcel number (APN) or tax ID number and the year the house was built under the Public Facts section, among other details. Be sure to write down the APN or tax ID number, since you’ll be using this in many of the steps below. With all the steps you’re required to take during the homebuying experience, you may be forgetting to ask some very important questions, like when was the house built and what exactly is its history?

For detailed permit records, you’ll often have to request them in digital form or make an appointment to review the original copies at the building or planning counter. The historical society is one of many organizations around the country that work with homeowners to trace the histories of their homes. When starting your quest, D’Alonzo points out, don’t dive into old records looking for your own address. Street names, house numbers and lot designations frequently change over the years, so it’s a good idea to work backward from current records. To uncover the names of former owners or tenants, D’Alonzo also suggests checking old city directories, organized by address. Historical societies or libraries usually have them, and they are available through the present day.

Type in your address without the “avenue” or “street” to see if anything pops up, also try just the street name. Including the address doesn’t always happen when people donate photos, you’ll have to get creative with your searches. You can use the resources we’ve outlined below to find information about your home's history, including any previous owners or renovations.

Knowing the history of your property can not only help you understand its current value, but it can also provide insight into any potential issues or maintenance needs that may arise in the future. Look for clues in the building materials - The materials used to construct your home can also provide clues about its age. For example, homes built before the 1950s often used plaster walls, while those built in the mid-20th century used drywall. Similarly, the type of wiring or plumbing used in your home can help you narrow down its age range.

Depending on the reason for the foreclosure, you can get a great deal on a property, especially if it’s preforeclosure or if you’re the first one to snap it up. Before you buy a house, confirm that no one has any claims on the property by using the LexisNexis Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.). This exchange gathers and reports up to seven years of claims against personal property, like a house or the land it’s on. DiedInHouse was founded by Roy Condrey when one of his tenants texted him in the middle of the night to ask, “Do you know your house is haunted? ” Condrey started to research online and discovered how difficult it was to uncover any information on the matter. The Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records is a wealth of information.

This could include old maps, photos, or documents that describe how the land was used, who lived there, and what the area was like at the time. A county recorder’s office, which may also be called a county clerk’s office, locates all taxable property in the city or county. They identify ownership, establish a taxable value on the property, and record other documents, such as deeds of trust, reconveyances, liens, and lien releases. “It’s easier to get info about the home—deeds, mortgages and so on,” she says, “than about the people, such as census lists,” which she peruses to learn personal details about tenants and owners. Glant recommends publicizing your curiosity, because neighbors and older community members will come out of the woodwork to tell you bits and pieces about your home’s history. Once you know an owner’s name, she suggests searching genealogical Internet sites for more information.

Hire a historian or genealogist - If you're having trouble finding information on notable residents, you may want to consider hiring a historian or genealogist. These professionals can help you research your house and neighborhood and may be able to uncover information that you wouldn't be able to find on your own. Look for physical evidence - Finally, you can look for physical evidence of significant events or gatherings in your home. Check for any unusual architecture or design features that may have been added for a specific purpose, such as a stage or dance floor.
