The outdoor patio below it, on Soho House's main level, was also revamped as part of the project. The works of late Mexican architect Luis Barragán, who is known for his bold colourful houses, informed the palette of teal, mustard and pale green, as well as the pink concrete roof that tops the outdoor bar.

As for taking in the views, the intersection of Water and Washington streets is where to go for the most Instagrammable photo opp. Photographers (professional and amateur) flock here for an iconic look at the sky-blue Manhattan Bridge set between the red brick warehouse buildings. With 20 clubs around the world, and eight in North America, including two in Manhattan in the Meatpacking District and the Lower East Side, the move to Brooklyn wasn’t entirely unexpected. The club, which reportedly has 71,000 members and a waiting list of about 27,000, has ambitious worldwide expansion plans and is considering a public-stock offering to fund it, the Wall Street Journal reported last month. On the walls, there are works from artists David Adjaye, Zoe Buckman, and Steven Siegel. And this is where those who are suckers for a good view—or suckers for a good view and roof-deck pools—will be. Ciolli turned Grimaldi’s into a national chain and eventually moved the original restaurant into a three-floor dining space in a former bank building at 1 Front Street. Following the sale, Patsy Grimaldi went into retirement, though he frequently checked in to make sure the new owners were making pizza the way he taught them to. After two decades away from the pizza oven, he could no longer resist the urge to be back in the business. In 2012, at the age of 81, Grimaldi and his wife Carol opened Julianna’s at 19 Old Fulton Street, the site of the original Patsy’s Pizzeria/Grimaldi’s restaurant.

A Timeline of Jessica Alba's The Honest Company

“It’s such a great area — you can see why so many people have moved here,” says Soho House founder and chief executive officer Nick Jones, glancing out of one of the soaring windows inside DUMBO House. The venue would open its doors to the CFDA the next evening, kicking off the membership club’s latest addition to the network — its first Brooklyn house. The calendar is filled with member events with the overarching idea to learn something and, possibly, meet someone.

Here, outposts of legendary New York food institutions like Ess-A-Bagel and Jacob’s Pickles bring the flavors of the city all under one roof (and to a river-facing outdoor terrace). “DUMBO has become an international destination,” say Eklund and Novo. “It offers expansive homes, stunning views, and state-of-the-art amenities,” say Fredrik Eklund and M. Monica Novo, licensed brokers with The Eklund Gomes team and Douglas Elliman, respectively. Indoor and outdoor pools, a full-size outdoor tennis court and ship-inspired playground, plus an indoor bowling alley, spin studio, boxing gym, and more.

LIIC sold fire insurance, a necessary protection for the many ships and goods in the area. The building is located on what was known as “Commercial Row.” This area, near Old Fulton Street, was also a familiar haunt for Walt Whitman. It was home to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, the newspaper Walt Whitman edited for two years, from 1846 to 1848. Everything in the room was carefully curated and designed especially for this location; the menus feature illustrations by a local Dumbo artist. The interior is painted the exact shade of blue of the Manhattan Bridge just off in the distance. And the art collection–every house has one–is curated under an architecture theme, with some of the abstract drawings created by local Brooklyn artists.

If you do get inside, remember, there’s no Instagramming your beautiful drink, no calling your friends to tell them who you saw in a cabana. Instead you can–or at least should–talk to your fellow creative humans. The official launch was earlier this month, but Dumbo House kicked off a bit earlier with a group of founding members meant to spread the word.

St. Ann’s Warehouse, an avant-garde arts organization known for its plays, music and spoken word performances, was formerly housed in a Brooklyn Heights Gothic church. The new 25,000-square-feet theater space was built within the footprint of the warehouse, with space leftover for an open-air garden bordered by the historic brick walls. The garden is open to the public during the same time as Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the theater produces programming year-round. Occupying the sixth and seventh floors of a former brickfactory, Mexican architect Luis Barragán was a huge inspirationfor the Soho House design team, influencing both the interior andexterior spaces of DUMBO House. Known for his bold and colourfulhouses, it was this playful use of colour that inspired the pinkconcrete roof used on the rooftop bar, as well as lots of richvelvet furnishings in purple, ochre and teal.

Empire Stores on Water Street is a shopping and dining destination located in what was once the heart of DUMBO’s industrial waterfront. Constructed in 1869 and 1885, the historic brick warehouse once stored goods from all over the world including barrels, bags of rubber, wool, linseed oil, and animal hides. The site most notably served as the Arbuckle Brothers Coffee warehouse. Other popular industries in the area were beer, iron-works, and lead paint.
